What is a Mexikaner?
A Mexikaner is an ice-cold German bar shot — most commonly Korn (a clear grain spirit) cut with tomato juice and a serious hit of chilli. The Mexikaner was born in Hamburg — but we're on a mission to make Berlin the Mexi capital of the world. Every bar mixes it a little differently; we drink one at each and review it.
How we rate
Every review is a first-hand visit — we buy the shot, taste it, photograph it, and score it the same way every time. The overall score is the headline; the axes below are what feed into it.
- Overall 🌵 0–10
- Our headline verdict — how good the Mexikaner is, all in: balance, freshness, kick and value for money. Shown as cacti, one per two points.
- Spice 🌶️ 0–10
- How hard the chilli hits — from a gentle warmth to a proper sweat.
- Fruitiness 🍓 0–10
- How fresh and tomatoey it tastes, versus flat or one-note.
- Alcohol 🥃 0–10
- How strong the Korn comes through.
- Price 🤠 €
- What the shot actually cost. Shown as cowboys on an inverse scale — more cowboys means better value (under €1.50 is five, €3+ is one).
Scores are our own, independent opinion — no bar pays for a review or a ranking.
